11th Annual High School Tournament

Virginia State USBC Hall of Fame…
The Virginia State USBC held its Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Staunton, VA. This year’s inductees were:

(L) Louis E. Watson, Jr., for Superior Performance and (R) Judith A. Edwards, for Meritorious Service.

Superior Performance – Louis E. Watson, Jr., Richmond, VA Louis was introduced to bowling by his Mother. He said it was an afternoon activity to keep him and his siblings out of trouble. He has been bowling for well over 18 years. His highest average as a certified bowler is a 235 and his highest series is an 858. As best as can be determined, Louis has recorded twenty-seven 800 series; forty-seven 300 games; twelve 299 games; four 298 games and eleven games with 22 strikes in a row. For twelve consecutive years he has averaged well over 200.  When asked if he had any advice or words of wisdom to bowlers who wish to improve or raise the level of their play, Louis said, “My advice to any bowler who wants to get better is to practice and bowl in centers that have tougher lane conditions. Don’t complain if you do not score as well as you would like to, just do the best that you can do. And last, but not least, practice, practice, practice.”  Louis gives a lot of credit for his success in bowling to his Mother, Sylvia Harding, and his Farther, Louis Watson, Sr., who has given him a lot of encouragement and support.

Meritorious Service – Judith A. Edwards, Rockville MD
Judy, a native of Washington, DC, started bowling at the age of six in a duckpin league. As she grew older, she joined the ten pin leagues. She fell in love with it. Soon she organized the Will Q Richardson Memorial League, since renamed the Tuesday Night Mixed League. She is currently Secretary/Treasurer of the league. She has always encouraged bowlers to participate in all tournaments (local and state) and stresses the importance to attend all meetings (leagues, association and state) to voice their opinions and concerns. Judy has always put the bowler first and would do anything to help the sport of bowling.  During her bowling career, Judy’s highest average is 176, her highest game 256, and her highest series is 647.  Judy is a strong supporter of the BVL, a National Bowling Program raising money for our hospitalized veterans. She has carried the flag for the BVL ceremonies at Arlington cemetery on Veterans Day and has attended the event for several years.
Judy’s mother, Frances Lee, served on the local women’s board for several years and was inducted into the Washington D.C. Area WBA Hall of Fame in 1989. Judy followed in her mother’s footsteps and was inducted in the
Washington D.C. Area WBS Hall of Fame in 2000.  Judy served on the Washington D.C. Area WBA board for many years as a director before becoming President in 2000. She served as a director and vice president of the local 600 Club from 1998 to 2005. She served on the lane inspection team and the ways and means committee for many years. When the local association merged and became Nation’s Capital Area USBC, she was elected to serve on that board as a director. On the board, she has been very active with the Youth bowlers.  In 1966 she was appointed to the Virginia State Women’s Bowling Association as a director. She worked her way up to become their President in 2008. Judy was chairman for the state ways and means for many years. When the three state associations merged in 2009 and became Virginia State USBC, Judy was elected to become their first President, the position she currently holds today.  During her career in bowling she has been elected to attend the National convention as a delegate to represent the local and/or state association.  Judy’s love for bowling and her tireless and endless dedication to service the bowlers, our veterans and the state association has warranted that she be inducted into the Virginia State USBC Hall of Fame.
